2 women killed in Arizona courthouse shooting

Associated Press

Holbrook, Ariz. — A shooting erupted outside a courthouse in eastern Arizona during a dispute over a custody hearing, leaving two women dead and another person wounded, officials said.

A suspect was arrested after encountering the women late Tuesday afternoon near the entrance of Navajo County Superior Court and opening fire following the hearing, county spokesman Adam Wolfe said.

Wolfe said the third victim suffered a leg wound, but no further details were immediately available.

The gunfire prompted officials to lock down the courthouse in Holbrook.

“This was an unfortunate situation, but our top objective was to protect the employees and citizens inside the building,” Navajo County Sheriff KC Clark said in a news release.

Investigators did not provide information about the court hearing or the dispute.

“We don’t know the specifics of it,” Wolfe said. “It appears to be a personal motive. This is not a mass shooting attempt.”

The names of the victims and the suspect were not released.

The lockdown ended after the uninjured suspect was taken into custody.
