Obama joins Twitter, for real this time
After six years in the White House, President Barack Obama has his own Twitter account. At 11:38 a.m. on Monday, Obama sent his first tweet from the verified handle @POTUS.
Anticipating people's skepticism, he emphasized that it's really him:
In 12 minutes, the tweet had more than 7,000 retweets and 6,000 favorites. The White House account also spread the news:
@POTUS will "serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him," the White House said in a blog post. "President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and @POTUS will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them."
Obama's Twitter presence until now has been at @BarackObama, an account run by Organizing for Action, the grassroots group tied to his presidential campaigns.
