Trump donors could be ‘VIP guests’ at Macomb event

Contributions to President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign could earn supporters a plane ticket to Michigan and a photo with the president this weekend.

In a campaign email Tuesday, Trump promoted his Washington Township rally and asked for contributions ranging from $1 to $15.

Each contributor will be entered to win a chance to be Trump’s “special VIP guest” for the contributor and a friend, according to the email.

“We will fly you out to Michigan, put you up at a hotel, and make sure we take a picture together so you can always remember the night I chose YOU over the fake news,” the email said.

In a separate automated phone call obtained by The Detroit News, Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump has appealed to supporters to attend the Saturday rally.

“While the media elite will be celebrating themselves in the D.C. swamp that night, President Trump wanted to be with real Americans instead to celebrate our national economic revival,” said Lara Trump, the wife of the president’s son Eric in a one-minute recording.

Trump has advertised the Washington Township rally Saturday as an alternative to the annual White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C. Instead, Trump will spend the evening at the Total Sports Park “with my favorite deplorables.”

“Why would I want to be stuck in a room with a bunch of fake news liberals who hate me?” Trump’s most recent campaign email said.

The Saturday rally will be his second trip to Michigan as president after a March 2017 visit to a mobility center in Ypsilanti.

Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in Macomb County 54 percent to 42 percent in 2016, and ended up winning Michigan by 10,704 votes. While campaigning in Macomb County in 2016, Trump appealed to blue-collar workers and “Reagan Democrats.”

The campaign rally is set for 7 p.m. at Total Sports Park, 65665 Powell Road in Washington, an 80-acre site that has outdoor and indoor facilities. Doors open at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at
