Michigan crafting plan to chase big development deals, targeting GM

Lansing — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration and lawmakers are preparing a significant economic development package that could involve millions of dollars to land large, unnamed projects and jet through the Legislature in the next week.

A major target of the effort quietly taking shape in Lansing is General Motors Co. Landing at least one of the Detroit automaker's two unannounced battery plants would offset rival Ford Motor Co.’s decision in September to partner with SK Innovation to invest $11.4 billion and create 11,000 new jobs in an electric truck plant, three battery plants and a supplier park to be divvied between Kentucky and Tennessee.
