Washington — House Speaker Paul Ryan says he will continue to speak out in defense of conservative principals, despite Donald Trump’s warning that Republican congressional leaders should “be quiet.”

The Wisconsin Republican says he and other congressional leaders “represent a separate but equal branch of government” and vowed to “robustly defend the separation of powers.”

Trump said Wednesday that GOP leaders “have to get a lot tougher and be quiet.”

The Wisconsin Republican says of Trump’s comments: “You can’t make this up sometimes.”

Ryan told reporters Thursday that, “We’re going to fight for those rights on behalf of our citizens that we remain a self-governing people.”

Despite differences with Trump — including Trump’s plan to ban Muslim immigrants — Ryan says he will not rescind his endorsement of the presumptive GOP nominee.
