Republican U.S. Rep. Justin Amash defeated Democrat Cathy Albro on Tuesday, winning a fifth term in the U.S. House representing his West Michigan District.

Amash beat Albro 55.1 percent to 42.5 percent, according to unofficial results reported by the Associated Press.

Amash, 38, is known as a libertarian-leaning constitutional conservative.

Albro, 65, is a former teacher and small business owner from Middleville.

The 3rd District is comprised of Kent, Barry, Ionia, Montcalm and Calhoun counties and includes part of Grand Rapids.

Amash has often criticized President Donald Trump for his policies.

He opposed earlier versions of the House health care legislation along with other members of the House Freedom Caucus last year, prompting the president to promise he would “fight them” for re-election in 2018.

A Trump aide later targeted Amash in a tweet, calling for a primary challenger.

Amash joined U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, as original co-sponsors of a bipartisan bill in October that would prohibit military assistance and arms sales to Saudi Arabia unless the U.S. certifies that the Saudi government was not responsible for journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance or death.
