The State Board of Education has narrowed the field of candidates to be Michigan’s next school superintendent to three administrators from southeast Michigan.

After two days of interviewing six candidates, the board chose as finalists Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Brian Whiston, Oakland Schools Superintendent Vickie Markavitch and Scott Menzel, superintendent of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District.

The three will be interviewed again March 18 in Lansing.

More than 50 people applied to succeed Superintendent Mike Flanagan, who is retiring this summer.
