Shelby Township — The Macomb County Division of Roads still has Hayes closed to through traffic in an area between 23 and 24 Mile because of a sinkhole.

“We had a 72-inch culvert beneath the road that had rusted out,” said Walt Schell, of the county engineering department. “Monday’s heavy rain finished it off. We have a contractor who is supposed to begin repairs today. The road is closed to through traffic, but not to local traffic for people going to their homes, etc.”

According to Schell, the repairs will be temporary with construction crews returning later in the year to completely cut out the section and install a permanent patch.

A possible alternate north/south route is Schoenherr.

That stretch of Hayes is used by about 17,000 vehicles per day.
