Detroit News readers talk taxes, State of the Union

America in decline

Re: The Detroit News’ Jan. 21 Editorial, “Tax hikes won’t improve state of our union”: Workers have made significant wage concessions and retirement cuts, there’s been a progressive defunding of civil society in the name of “cutting waste”, “enabling job creators”, and “starving the beast”, we find ourselves in a condition of a declining educational system, rotten roads, cripping student debt, declining middle class incomes, and a shift of wealth from the middle class to the wealthiest 1% of the country.

In this situation, The Detroit News editorial page has chosen to castigate the person elected to the White House as irresponsible.

Are tax hikes good or bad?

Funny, when Gov. Snyder proposes tax hikes, (except he taxes the poor and middle class), it’s a great idea here at The Detroit News, but when President Obama proposes the opposite, it’s a bad idea.

All I know is my take home pay is a lot less than it was 5 years ago, and I have not had a raise in years. The tax bracket keeps changing. It would be nice if I could take my wife out more often, but then Uncle Sam gets the money. What they do with it, I have no idea.
