Letter: Make Legislature part time
Re: Nolan Finley’s March 15 column, “Make Plan B a part-time Legislature”: A few years ago a group from the Kalamazoo area was trying to get the issue of a part-time legislature on the ballot. I know, because I volunteered to get signatures for the petitions. Unfortunately, the effort ran out of money. The petition included three areas: 1. Change from a full-time, to part-time legislature; 2. Eliminate term limits; 3. Legislator’s pay would be based on the median income average in the state of Michigan.
I’m really disappointed with our legislators. I think part time is sensible and so must the other 43 states that already are part time. I read that Texas has one legislative meeting every two years. Could that be why Texas is growing and prospering? Legislators spending less time in Lansing could keep them from making a lot of unnecessary mischief. A real bonus is the money saved by not having to pay full-time salaries and benefits. Michigan should join the majority of other states who have a part-time legislature. I’d vote yes in a heartbeat!!
