Transparency and GM tax information

Re: The Detroit News’ Dec 17 editorial calling for the state to release the details of a recent amendment to General Motors’ tax credit deal: The deal does provide GM with hundreds of millions of other tax dollars. But these numbers should already be public, under state law.

The tax credits GM and jobs created are to be disclosed in this tax credit program’s annual report. The Michigan Economic Development Corp. has chosen not to comply with the law. The MEDC doesn’t report any of the costs of these credits for GM or for others, and the job creation information they provide is incomplete and dated. Legislators should hold hearings to ask why.
