Paul W. Smith: Thinking of up north and sunny South
As winter arrived this past week (and is already on its way out today), I started thinking about what I’ve always called “the Michigan dream,” having a cottage up north for summer fun getaways and having a place in Florida to get away from it all.
For a moment, I lamented how that, for me, is still just a dream. Then I reminded myself just how lucky we are to be able to enjoy all of the joys of northern Michigan and the warmth of Florida without the expense and responsibilities of ownership.
I’m lucky enough to have a job that gets me to one of the finest hotels in the world every summer, Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. They already have special packages for special occasions like Mother’s Day and Memorial Day.
As for Florida, you can drive it or take one of Delta’s non-stops to lots of places in the Sunshine State.
We have kind of settled on what I call Detroit’s southernmost point, Naples, Florida (just named the happiest and healthiest city in America).
The three best-known places to stay on the Gulf would be The Ritz (if you’ve hit the lottery), LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort (if you inherited some dough) and Edgewater Beach Hotel (if you work hard for your money and are careful with it.) You can’t go wrong with any of them, but we’ve been very happy with Edgewater.
I feel like I’m still hosting my old nationally syndicated “Travel Show.”
Speaking of travel, I hope you’ll wake up with me “Live in Geneva, Switzerland” Tuesday and Wednesday when I broadcast from the 86th Geneva International Motor Show.
Paul W. Smith is host of “The Paul W. Smith Show” on WJR-AM (760) from 5:30-9 a.m. Monday-Friday.
