Paul W. Smith: Pure Michigan island hopping

Paul W. Smith

From Mackinac Island for the Detroit Regional Chamber Mackinac Policy Conference to the “Now On” Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, it’s another “Only in Michigan” experience!

From no cars to roaring super cars.

Dennis Archer Jr., president of Archer Corporate Services and chairman of the 2016 Detroit Regional Chamber Mackinac Policy Conference, from my vantage point joined Chamber president and CEO Sandy Baruah and his great team in delivering a winning framework for a very successful conference.

It is, of course, up to a number of other people now to follow through, work together and fix, solve, and in some cases, heal the myriad problems facing us today. There are many good, and even great things going on all around us, but the bad stuff seems to draw the most attention.

It was also great to see former Mayor Dennis Archer and retired Judge Trudy Duncombe Archer stay quietly behind the scenes watching their son carry out his duties as chairman, just as his father did some 10 years ago.

The gates open at 7:30 this morning as the 2016 Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix is underway.

Autograph sessions, lots of fun family activities, musical performances, and, of course, nonstop mind blowing, spine tingling, fantastic racing by some of the best drivers in the world.

Congratulations to Team Penske’s Bud Denker, Michael Montri and of course, “The Captain” Roger Penske; Chevrolet Racing’s Jim Campbell, GM’s Mark Reuss, Merrill Cain and all of the great workers and volunteers that make this important Detroit event so much fun and so successful.

Paul W. Smith is host of “The Paul W. Smith Show” on WJR-AM (760) from 5:30-9 a.m. Monday-Friday.
