Opinion: Illegal, out-of-state alcohol sales have no place in Michigan

In 2019, more than 2 million bottles of alcohol were shipped into the state. Nearly one-third of those bottles were shipped into our state illegally by out-of-state retailers. The numbers are staggering and show just how pervasive this issue is in our state.

Using information from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and excise tax data from the state of Michigan, we found in 2018 more than 1 million bottles of alcohol were shipped into Michigan in just six months. At least 300,000 of those bottles were shipped illegally by out-of-state retailers.
