Opinion: Michigan business plan feels like a scene from 'Willy Wonka'

Quentin Messer — the state’s newest leader of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. — recently told reporters his goal is to make other states "fear" the quasi-governmental agency he now leads. 

At the time, we didn’t think his goal would take much. The MEDC has plenty of practice being scary, after all. By dictating a top-down economic future for our state, giving billions of tax dollars to politically connected corporations, and creating a government-subsidized war for talent, it has been menacing taxpayers and small business owners for years.
