A few years ago, I had a 17-year-old boy in for a regular well visit. In the routine depression screening, he shared that he had been thinking about suicide — a lot. As I sat and discussed this with him, he told me that he had planned to shoot himself that very night using his father’s gun, which he had stored under his mattress.
