Opinion: State's windfall should mean tax cuts, not more spending

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s proposed budget spends far more than can be justified by growth in the state’s population growth and cost of living adjustments. Her fiscal year 2022-23 budget calls to spend $74 billion, with $42 billion coming from state taxes and fees, more than the $39 billion the state would spend if it limited spending hikes to reflect inflation and population growth.
