Opinion: University of Michigan has a toxic political climate

“America was founded on racism.”

These words were scrawled in black Sharpie atop posters advertising an event in early April featuring former California gubernatorial candidate and political pundit Larry Elder. The posters, belonging to the University of Michigan Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter, featured the headline “Don’t let the demagogues fool you: America is not a racist country” with a headshot of a smiling Elder. While intentionally provocative, the event hoped to open up a dialogue on race relations in 21st-century America.
