SC: Roby Turner teams up on T-shirt fundraiser
Roby Turner teams up on T-shirt fundraiser
We remember Roby Turner as a hard-working Detroit fashion model who was always in school and eventually went off to model in New York and South Africa. We were delighted when we ran into him at a recent charity event and had a chance to catch up.
After obtaining an MBA from Harvard Business School, Roby continued to model for major brands all over the world, including Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein. Next, he landed in Los Angeles, where he started forming a clothing brand, Citizen Ciao — a brand that takes surf to the streets and Detroit to Los Angeles. What’s really cool is that in an effort to give back to the community, Roby jumped at an opportunity to work with Matt Scott, a fellow Detroiter, a k a the LeBron James of Wheelchair Basketball. He teamed up with the gold medal champion of Team USA and the National Wheelchair Basketball Association to design a limited edition T-shirt in honor of his quest for another gold medal at the Rio Summer Games.
“I’m kind of in shock that his story hasn’t been told in Detroit, he’s been the true meaning of success, will and determination, along with being inspirational, just like his ‘No Excuses’ Nike commercial,” says Roby. “It’s a great honor to work with Matt on this limited edition garment for his cause.” For every limited edition tee sold at citizenciao.com, generous proceeds go toward supporting disability athletes at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association.
Victoria Christian touts her father’s tony perfume
A very lovely, charming and witty Victoria Christian breezed through Saks Fifth Avenue in Troy on Friday to promote her father’s coveted eponymous perfume, Clive Christian, known as the most expensive perfume in the world. “I guess you could say I come to Detroit every 15 years,” teased Victoria, who lives in London. “That’s when I was here last — 15 years ago.” About 30 special Clive Christian customers gathered at Saks to meet Victoria.
Wearing a cheerful floral-print dress with dark brown hair neatly pulled back into a long pony tail, she stood in front of the crowd and evoked a little history of the renowned perfume house. With a collection of perfumes for men and women, Clive Christian comes in at many price points, but a single ounce of Clive Christian Perfume No. 1 is $2,350. And then, there is the magnificent Clive Christian No. 1 Imperial Majesty Edition. Ready? A whopping $215,000. This unbelievable edition comes in a French Baccarat crystal flacon. The neck of the bottle is fashioned after the coronation tiara of the British queen and is made of 18-carat gold inset with a 5-carat brilliant-cut diamond. This collar is later engraved with the owner’s name. This one-of-a-kind bottle is then gently placed into a velvet-lined ebony case with gold and platinum details.
MOCAD doubles up on fundraisers Wednesday night
“I guess you could say we really like to party at MOCAD,” remarked MOCAD Executive Director Elysia Borowy-Reeder, when asked about two events benefiting the museum on Wednesday night. First, at the facility, Detroiter Mindy Lopus and crew hosted an eclectic group of about 75 people for a major night of wine tasting with winemakers from 11 EPIC wineries. EPIC is Essex Pelee Island Coast, a collection of wineries along the North Shore of Lake Erie in Canada. In Birmingham, noted contemporary art collector Terese Reyes, along with Cranbrook Architect-in-Residence Bill Massie, hosted about 50 people at Terese’s stunning home for an intimate strolling dinner. The dinner was part of MOCAD’s annual summer fundraiser, Interchange Art + Dinner Series.
