Sophia Loren coming to Detroit Opera House

She’s the epitome of grace, beauty and elegance. For many years she’s been the apple of every boy’s eye. Legendary actress Sophia Loren will make a rare appearance in Detroit this fall in a performance called, “A Captivating Evening With Sophia Loren,” presented by Andiamo Italia. On Sept. 14, the Oscar-winning actress will enthrall crowds at the Detroit Opera House with an evening of intimate conversation. The show will include a candid Q&A, as well as fascinating tales about her life in Italy, her love of film and her illustrious career, which spans five decades.

There are only a handful of dates around the country on this tour and it turns out that Sophia wanted to make the Detroit stop because of a special connection. It seems that she and the late Frank Stella, a well-known Detroit civic leader and businessman who died in 2010, were close friends.

“She agreed to do the performance at the Detroit Opera House because the Opera House was so special to Frank Stella,” explains Andiamo Italia owner Joe Vicari. “We will be making a contribution to the Opera House in honor of Mr. Frank Stella and Sophia Loren.”

Tickets are on sale through or at the Detroit Opera House box office. Limited VIP meet-and-greet packages are also available.

New Mike Posner video set in Downtown Boxing

Singer/songwriter Mike Posner has a new single with a stunning video that was filmed on-site at Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program. “Be As You Are Are,” is a follow-up to Posner’s hit song, “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” which topped the charts in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom.

The Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program provides a safe haven for children ages 5-18 in Detroit. More than just boxing, founder Khali Sweeney developed it as a place for students to learn how to study through tutoring. So it is a gym that teaches discipline through boxing, as well as a community center.

“I really responded to the message behind this song,” Sweeney said. “ ‘Be As You Are’ is about being true to yourself. That is something students learn in academic and athletic programs at Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program every day. So when we were approached about being included as a location for this video shoot, we were pleased to be part of it. Seeing it completed, it’s inspiring how Mike Posner has portrayed this city and idea — musically and visually.”
