New Detroit/L.A.-based production company in gear

We caught up with Detroiter Raffi Muschegian on Wednesday night, smashing a slab of barbecue ribs during dinner at the Morrie in Royal Oak. Seems he was in the midst of a power meeting with one of his partners, Armen Shahrigian, concerning a project for their new Detroit/L.A.-based independent film and TV company known as To the Edge Entertainment. “First up on To the Edge’s roster for 2017 is a drama entitled ‘A Prisoners Daughter,’ directed by our third partner, Mark Bacci,” Raffi explains. “The producers are in talks with James Caan and Sarah Wayne Callies to co-star. The film is slated to begin production in spring of 2017.” We were particularly pleased to hear about a Detroit-based television series that To The Edge has in the works. It is described as a political drama series set in the heart of the city during the auto crisis. Hmmm, we can hardly wait for this one.

Sommeliers to face off at Rugby Grille event

The Townsend Hotel is promoting an event series called Somm Slam on Jan. 12 in its signature restaurant, the Rugby Grille. This fine wine and culinary experience will pit some of the finest sommeliers in the city against each other in a winner-takes-all, four- round fight. The “Tale of the Tape” pits certified sommelier Kat Hawkins from Wright & Co. against veteran sommelier Gerry Baker of the Mulefoot Gastropub. The Rugby Grille chefs will prepare four courses and appetizers, and anonymously the two sommeliers will offer a pre-selected wine to pair with each course. At the end of the night, tallied votes will determine the winner. “It’s a fun, informative, entertaining evening,” explains the Townsend’s director of Food and Beverage, Jérôme Fosset. “We did one earlier in the year, then we have this one, and then we’ll finish in March with a face-off of the two winners.” Tickets to the event are $100.

Designer William Malcolm gets Lincoln suit request

Local fashion designer William Malcolm was recently given an opportunity to show off his creative approach by crafting a bespoke suit for recording artist Mali Music at the request of the Lincoln Motor Co. Back in October, Lincoln returned as the exclusive automotive sponsor of the RagTrade Atlanta Runway Show. Part of the deal was contracting Malcolm to tailor a custom suit for Mali Music to wear in the show. The entire process was beautifully captured for a short video. “The Lincoln Motor Co. is so astute to the details,” says Malcolm. “Every amenity is incorporated into the 2017 Continental, which is what I used for my inspiration. It’s the way I like to design my suits.” His own design style is rooted in classic silhouettes accentuated by modern details and personal touches. You can watch the video on YouTube at
