SC: Much of the action was courtside at NBA Finals

Much of the action was courtside at NBA Finals

While most Detroit basketball fans were excited about watching the NBA Finals on TV over the past couple weeks, a large expanse of folks appeared to be equally as interested in who was in the audience. It seems that local businessman Horatio Williams attended each game and was photographed sitting next to KevinDurant’s mom, Wanda Durant. Horatio, who lives in Grosse Pointe, runs a nonemergency medical transportation company, as well as an eponymous nonprofit organization that addresses the needs of inner city children. So what’s up, Horatio? What’s up with you and K.D. and the mama? “I am friends with Kevin and Wanda and was there as their guest,” he says. “We’re working on some collaborations with the Real MVP (Wanda’s charity) and the Horatio Williams Foundation.” Hmmmm. We’ll keep you posted.

Garden Party at Meadow Brook Hall has fine food, music

Nearly 600 guests attended the Garden Party on Sunday. Held at Meadow Brook Hall, this year’s food was probably the best it has ever been, including an impressive shrimp display from Joe Muer, Red Coat burgers, and a unique panna cotta from Bistro 82. And although the weather was 90 and sunny all day, the women made outstanding fashion statements as the male guests enjoyed cigars by the classic car display. Olivia Millerschin, a Rochester Hills native who was a finalist on America’s Got Talent, performed in the Pegasus garden throughout the afternoon. Also new this year, guests were allowed to explore the first floor of the house and learn about its history, in addition to TapSnap service where guests were able to take photos and create GIFs in front of the fountain. Over $150,000 was raised for Oakland Community College’s professional trades.

Riverfront Relaxin’ returns with movies, music

You may recall last summer the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy started a free entertainment series, Riverfront Relaxin’ with live music and a featured movie. Well, it’s back this year, with an additional week and a twist on one of the movie selections. Riverfront Relaxin’ takes place each Thursday at West Riverfront Park in Detroit beginning July 13 through Aug. 17 for a total of five nights, with food trucks, vendors and culminating with classic movies under the stars. The public is invited to vote for their choice of movie for Aug. 3 from a list of suggested movies. The voting will run June 19-30 via the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy’s Facebook page. Guests are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food and beverages are available for purchase and free parking is available. Among the scheduled musical guests are Larry Lee & the Back in the Day Band, Serieux, and Sun Messengers. For information, visit
