SC: Designer Char Glover an all-star on upcoming show
Detroiter Char Glover an all-star on the upcoming ‘Project Runway’
We recently chatted up Detroit fashion designer Joe Faris, who was proud to talk about another Detroit native who has made her mark on “Project Runway,” the reality show that focuses on fashion design. Joe competed on Season 5 of Project Runway back in 2008. Now, Detroiter Char Glover, who currently divides her time between The D and L.A., appears this season on “Project Runway All Stars.” Char originally appeared on Season 13 with her collection that she refers to as “Flygirl’s fashion gumbo.” The show airs on at 9 p.m. Thursdays on Lifetime.
Spectacles lives on in Zana Smith’s new space
Zana Smith opened Spectacles, her chic and funky fashion boutique, in downtown Detroit in 1984. In 2014, after 30 successful years of business, her landlord informed her that the building had been sold to the Lear Corp. and that she had to vacate the premises. After evaluating an uprising from her customers and a little research on Zana and Spectacles, Lear decided Zana was a perfect fit for its future plans. She was not only asked to stay, but Lear refurbished her store (along with the rest of the building) and offered her a long-term lease at a much better rate. Spectacles re-opened last month in time to catch the end of the Christmas shopping season. “I’m very happy and optimistic,” Zana says. “We’re still in the construction zone, though, as Dan Gilbert begins the work on Detroit’s tallest building. I expect to see a lot of hard hats and construction boots in the future, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a successful final outcome.”
Time to lose weight — and prep for a new restaurant
So now it begins — the race to lose the extra pounds we all put on during the holiday season. To the rescue of some, Pulse Fitness Detroit, for the first time ever, will offer a Winter Boot Camp at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 17 at Beacon Park. Located in the Winter Lodge, (a cozy 10,000-square-feet heated tent) the workout is free and is a guaranteed challenge to all who participate, focusing on strength, cardio and stability. Register at Pulsefitnesstraining.com or mindbodyonline.com.
And speaking of Beacon Park, we hear the LePage family (Norman, Bonnie, Scott and Suzanne) will open their flagship restaurant called Lumen there in March of this year. The LePage family operates several well-known restaurants and breweries, including Big Rock Chophouse, Griffin Claw Brewing Company and Clubhouse BFD.
