SC: Queen of the Blues regal here and abroad
Queen of the Blues regal here and abroad
We knew it would be just a matter of time before Detroit’s own Queen of the Blues, Thornetta Davis-Anderson, became international. After getting eight Detroit Music Awards last year, she gave a stellar performance a couple weeks ago at globalFEST in New York, topped only by receiving the Acadamie du Jazz Award in Paris for her album, “Honest Woman.” “The whole trip was a dream come true,” Thornetta says. “My husband, James, and I visited the street corner in Paris where he proposed in 2005.” She was also thrilled that jazz bass virtuoso Christian McBride accompanied her during her performance in Paris at the award show.
Detroit Club to rise again downtown
The Detroit Club, once one of Detroit’s most prestigious private clubs, is about to make a comeback. Owners Lynn and Emre Uralli have put millions into the extensive refurbish of the building that sits on Cass in downtown Detroit. The big reveal took place at a private grand opening party a couple weeks ago. Some 300 guests enjoyed beef tenderloin, an elaborate seafood bar, and a mean salmon wellington, along with open bars, passed scotch and cigars, and jazz entertainment by Straight Ahead. “We hope to have the restaurant open to the public by the end of the month,” says Lynn. The club features refurbished dining rooms and lounges, a cozy exercise room and spa, and 10 beautifully decorated overnight guest suites. Visit thedetroitclub.com.
Miyazaki steak comes to London Chop House
As chop houses go, the London Chop House is indisputably one of our town’s best. Keeping its place at the front of the line, executive chef RJ Scherer moves heaven and earth to bring Chop House guests nothing but the best. Most recently, he brought in the ultimate in steaks — a Miyazaki, A5 (yield grade), 12-plus (marble grade) cut of beef. “The fat of this steak literally melts at the temperature of your mouth,” explains RJ. “It is so rich, you don’t need much of it. It is a definitive experience in eating steak.” By the way, the cost is $150 for a 5-ounce serving. The Miyazaki steak will be available at the London Chop House throughout the week, while they last.
