NBA star swings by Birmingham for MLK picture

NBA player Austin James Rivers, who plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, popped into the Robert Kidd Gallery in Birmingham last week to purchase a Martin Luther KingJr. mug shot for his new home in L.A. “What a nice kid,” says Robert Kidd owner Gerard Marti. “And the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. His dad is Glenn Anton “Doc” Rivers, a former player who is now coach for the Los Angeles Clippers. Wow, $11 million. I should have been born taller,” Marti joked about the younger Rivers’ salary. Several ball players have visited Robert Kidd Gallery to make purchases from Marti’s mugshot series, including Utah Jazz’ Ekpe Udoh and Dallas Maverick Javale McGee.

Yan International welcomes Year of the Dog

The lovely Yan Stewart of Yan International hosted a festive Chinese New Year celebration at Saks Fifth Ave in Troy last week. The party was to celebrate the Year of the Dog and included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a Lion Dance courtesy of Feng Taste in Farmington Hills. About 130 guests also enjoyed adance performance from Detroit Dolls Dance Troupe, along with a fast-paced runway show from Saks’ designer collections. Saks also introduced the arrival of the prestigious Creed fragrances and passed out samples to all guests.

Valentine’s Day romance at the Roostertail

For Valentine’s Day, Tom Schoenith invited all couples who have been married or had their reception at the Roostertail in the past 60 years (and are still together) for complimentary cocktails, dinner and dancing. More than 50 couples came out for the romantic festivities. The longest married couple of the evening was Patti and Jim Buhalis, who were married at the riverfront venue Feb. 11, 1968.
