SC: ‘School of Rock’ cast parties at Mario’s
‘School of Rock’ has cast party at Mario’s
Staying with the decades-old tradition of Mario’s Restaurant as host of the official cast party for nearby theater productions, owner Vince Passalacqua invited about 40 cast members from the show “School of Rock” to his renowned Midtown Italian eatery Tuesday. “Mario’s Italian has been partnering with Broadway in Detroit and the Fisher Theatre for years, offering dinner theater packages,” says Vince. “Additionally, we are the go-to for all the productions cast parties.” Cast and crew enjoyed a hearty spread of Mario’s fine Italian fare along with cocktails (lots of Shirley Temples for this troupe), networking, and posing for Mario’s Broadway Wall of Fame. Adult main characters (and East Coast natives) Emily Borromeo (she plays Patty) and Merritt David Janes (he’s Dewey) are looking forward to visiting the Motown Museum and Greektown. School of Rock plays at the Fisher Theatre through April 22.
Izzo shares his secrets at Coaches Forum
When it comes to connecting with young people, “Turn off the phone and email,” says legendary Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo. When he needs to talk to his players, Izzo says only does it face to face. “I like to read body language, look into someone’s eyes,” he adds. “You can’t do that with email.” This was part of the poignant message that Izzo delivered during his keynote speech at the Horatio Williams Foundation’s annual Coaches Forum at MGM Grand Casino on April 6. High school and college coaches from across the country gathered for the event that precedes the foundation’s popular Second Chance Basketball games that offer college scholarships to inner-city, at-risk students. Izzo’s mission was to inspire and motivate the coaches. In the last 10 years, through the Second Chance Games, the Horatio Williams Foundation has issued hundreds of college scholarships to its students. Guests enjoyed everything from gazpacho to short ribs with lots of corned beef and chopped liver in between. Guests included WCSX Morning Show host Jim O’Brien, “Hire It Done” host Adam Helfman, media personality Karen Dumas, and podiatrist Kairi Horsley.
