Karen and Matt Cullen hosts the Sunset at the Zoo Benefactor party.

More than 50 guests gathered for the Sunset at the Zoo Benefactor Bash at the plush Grosse Pointe Woods home of Karen and Matt Cullen Tuesday evening. Attendees enjoyed cocktails and appetizers on a beautiful outdoor terrace.

Detroit Zoological Society CEO and Executive Director Ron Kagan shared remarks, thanking guests and sponsors as well as Sunset co-chairs Shannon and Dr. Terry Harvill of Northville for their continued support and building excitement for Sunset at the Zoo “Safari” to take place on June 8.

In keeping with the tradition of offering a plush animal and cookie treat for guests as they departed the benefactor party, stuffed giraffes lined the stairs and safari-themed cookies filled baskets by the door.

This year’s Sunset at the Zoo celebrates the Detroit Zoological Society’s wide array of education programs for learners of all ages. Tickets for the event, which start at $175 per person, are available online or at the gate.

Women’s Power Happy Hour

Nearly 400 women attended the fifth annual Women’s Power Happy Hour on Tuesday at MGM Grand Detroit. A raffle for two airline tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S. (donated by Joan Anderson Travel Services) raised enough money for Gleaners to provide nearly 8,000 meals.

Recording artist Apropos dazzled the crowd with his voice, performing a mix of classic and contemporary covers throughout the evening. Guests dined on a number of dishes from the strolling buffet, along with cocktails from a premium bar, featuring a signature drink, “The Seductive Black Swan,” with vodka, blackberries and lemonade.

In a brief program, Gleaners President and CEO Gerry Brisson gave a shout-out to Women’s Power Breakfast founding chair, Dulcie Rosenfeld, the Women’s Power Breakfast event chairs and honorary chairs and Women’s Power Happy Hour chairs.  He also acknowledged the Women’s Power event sponsors -- PNC, Delta Air Lines, DTE Energy, Children’s Hospital of MI, Quicken Loans and Karmanos companies (Karmanos Kids, The Cuddlers, Danialle Karamanos Work It Out, and MadDog Technologies). Gleaners CDO Ryan Hoyle and Mass Mutual Great Lakes President and CEO Manuel Amezcua also addressed the crowd.
