'Emperor of Eyeglasses' and D.O.C. founder dies

We have lost an iconic style warrior. The Emperor of Eyeglasses, Dr. Donald L. Golden, passed away Monday night, just two months shy of his 100th birthday. Known for his impeccable fashion sense and lavish lifestyle, Dr. Golden was one of the first doctors to leverage media advertising to build his business. He was the founder of the well-known Detroit Optometric Centers, better known as D.O.C. Says Richard Golden, his son, who took over the business along with his brothers, growing it to 118 stores throughout several states: “He loved professional boxing. He was on the Michigan Boxing Commission. He loved to golf. He loved to travel. Being well-dressed was something that was very important to him. He wore custom suits, beautiful jewelry and was always dressed to the nines. He instilled that sense of style in my brothers and me.” Adds another son, Randal Golden: “He had an uncanny ability to recall details from events that happened 50-60 years ago. He was a wonderful story teller. We will all miss him terribly.” Rest well, Dr. Golden. We see the world more stylishly because of you.

First birthday party a Disney-style celebration

Detroit-born rapper Payroll Giovanni hosted a lavish party celebrating his daughter, Khristian Dior Rose’, first birthday on Sunday. The terrace at Steven Lelli’s on The Green in Farmington Hills was transformed into a magical Minnie and Mickey Mouse in Paris theme, featuring elaborate floral displays, extravagant inflatables, sweet stations, mouse ears for all the guests, and of course, an adorable real, live Minnie and Mickey. Guests danced and enjoyed a sit down, multi-course gourmet meal. Among the guests was rapper Kash Doll. “She and Payroll were both so kind,” says Lelli’s owner, Mark Zarkin. “When the word spread to other parts of the restaurant that they were here, people wanted to get autographs and photos. They were very nice about it.” Kash Doll is Khristian’s godmother. If the first birthday commands a celebration of this ilk, we can’t wait to see what Sweet Sixteen will look like.
