Society Confidential: Big Sean, Lawrence Lamont make a dynamic duo
Big Sean, Lawrence Lamont make a dynamic duo
We chatted up native Detroit film maker Lawrence Lamont on Wednesday about the release of his most recent directorial triumph, a music video/short movie, called “Single Again”, starring recording artist Big Sean. Lawrence and Big Sean met as teenagers while living in Detroit. They have maintained their strong friendship over the years and they both now work and live in Los Angeles. They have collaborated on several projects together, including Big Sean’s “IDFWU,” featuring Kanye West, and “Light,” for which the dynamic duo won an MTV Video Music Award. “Single Again” is a complicated story that involves love, social media scandal and a man on trial for cheating.
Starring in the short are actress Ryan Destiny (“Star”) and actor Keith Powers (“Straight Outta Compton”), with appearances from several Detroit actors and personalities, including a major role from WDIV anchor Rhonda Walker as a TV news reporter. Lawrence and Big Sean agreed that the entire video would be filmed in Detroit. “Detroit is often depicted poorly in film projects,” says Lawrence. “The beauty of Detroit is ignored. So we set out to highlight the architecture, the people, the heart of Detroit.”
The “Single Again” project is just a taste of what’s soon to come to Detroit via Lawrence Lamont and Big Sean. Big Sean posted on Instagram on Wednesday, “we started a production company and we doin TV shows n movies! What’s life if you can’t help put ya people on dawg, facts!” Lawrence told us a little more: “It’s called Great Lakes Pictures, and in addition to TV shows and films, we’re going to tell a lot of Detroit stories. We’re both very excited. The first film project will be shot in Detroit late this winter.” “Single Again” was released Tuesday and has already received more than 3 million views on YouTube.
Christmas (sweaters) in July
It was the end of July, but PR guru Jason Brown was in New York promoting Christmas. Jason’s company, PublicCity PR, represents UglyChristmasSweater.com. He went to New York to pitch Ugly Christmas Sweater segments to "The Tonight Show" and to "The Howard Stern Show." Nothing has been written in stone yet for this year, but Jason’s team has a pretty good record for years past, with ugly sweaters being featured on shows like "Good Morning America," "Today," "The Wendy Williams Show," "Live With Kelly and Ryan" and others. The 2019 Ugly Christmas Sweaters were revealed last week at the Consumer Product Events Annual Gift Guide Show and can be seen at uglychristmassweater.com.
