When my editor asked me to come up with an idea for interacting with some of my readers, I mentioned I'd just had the pleasure of meeting several at a sit, knit and crochet event I attended. She immediately said, "We could do that here!" After breaking into a "happy dance," I regained my composure, returned to my work space and began making plans.

Now, with all loose ends in place, let's get together for the first (ever) "Detroit News Stitch-Together," set for May 13 from 2-4 p.m. at our new location, 160 W. Fort., in downtown Detroit.

Fifteen knitters and crocheters will be selected to be part of a free afternoon of knitting and crocheting with lots of fun and creativity, coffee and donuts, and a drawing for a gift basket with a retail value of $230, generously donated by the Wool & the Floss (397 Fisher, Grosse Pointe) as a door prize for one lucky winner.

The basket contains four skeins of Malabrigo Lace, a Dream in Color Exclusive Club 2014 Classy yarn kit with a knitting and crocheting pattern, five skeins of Prism Dover, five skeins of Zitron Trekking, one skein of Splash, a Stitch Happy notebook and pen, Heel Foot Cream, Wool Wash for Natural Fibers, and a pair of lighted reading glasses by Foster Grant.

For a chance to be part of the "Stitch-Together," just send an email to yours truly at with your name, daytime telephone number, a paragraph about why you'd like to be part of the group, how long you've been knitting and/or crocheting, and a photo of a recent project. Please put the words "Stitch-Together" in the subject line. (You must be at least 18 years of age to enter.)

The deadline to submit your entry is May 4 at midnight. Winners will be notified by email.

Those selected will be asked to bring 15 copies of their favorite knitting or crocheting pattern to share, a finished project for show-and-tell, one new skein of yarn from their stash to trade, and, of course, something to knit or crochet.
