I was never crazy about the idea of appointing a special prosecutor to delve into potential Russian meddling in the 2016 election. It’s not that I don’t believe such interference on behalf of Donald Trump is inconceivable. Rather, I worried such an investigation would produce the same results as similar past probes: A lot of time and money would be spent to net a few minnows, without ever landing the big fish.

And sure enough, the Robert Mueller investigation seems to be wandering endlessly in search of a crime that would justify its existence.

But I want it to continue to a certain conclusion, lest it end early and leave a cloud of illegitimacy over Trump’s presidency.

And I do want to know if the Russians colluded with the Trump campaign.

I also want to know whether the Obama Justice Department worked to both defeat Trump and then undermine him after he won.

At Trump’s demand, the FBI is now examining that question, which has Democrats howling that the new investigation is driven by politics and presents some sort of ill-defined constitutional crisis.

But there is far more substantial evidence of actual wrongdoing on the part of the FBI and intelligence officials who are accused of targeting Trump than there was that the president’s campaign colluded with the Russians. And yet Democrats cheered on the opening of that investigation.

In terms of a threat to our democracy, it's more frightening to think a sitting administration used the immense power of the government to manipulate the selection of its successor than that some ham-handed Russian operatives made a stab at helping Trump.

Democrats are reaping what they sowed. They were convinced Mueller would bring down Trump. But now it looks more likely that top Obama administration officials, and perhaps the former president himself, will soon face some very embarrassing revelations.

I say keep pulling both threads until they unravel and reveal the truth about this sordid election.
