Paul W. Smith: On and off the track

Paul W. Smith

No sooner do we finish the most successful Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix ever, we can continue to feed our “need for speed” this weekend at the fabulous raceway in our own backyard, Michigan International Speedway.

In the NASCAR XFINITY Series, the Menard’s 250 presented by Valvoline is today at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, it’s the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. FireKeepers Casino 400 starts at 1 p.m.

MIS President Roger Curtis and his team do a great job making sure you and your family have a wonderful fun-filled experience with everything going on.

That’s on and off the track.

Speaking of tracks, I am honored to be on the voice track of the best ferry to Mackinac Island as Chris Shepler has invited me to do the announcements on Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry.

I am honored to follow in the footsteps of the fine actor, Ed Herrmann, who passed away Dec. 31, 2014, and handled those duties for a number of years. Ed did a tremendous volume of voice work and always did it very well.

And speaking of Mackinac Island, you can celebrate Grand Hotel’s 129th birthday June 26 through July 1 with special offerings and opportunities still available. Also, Wine Appreciation Weekend is July 8-10 as Cakebread Cellars wines will be featured at America’s Summer Place, Grand Hotel, along the Straits of Mackinac and the World’s Longest Porch.

On a personal note, great thanks and appreciation to the Michigan Association Of Broadcasters for inducting me into the 2016 Michigan Broadcasting Hall of Fame. It is truly an honor to stand alongside so many great broadcasters that preceded me.

You’ve made my mother very happy.

Paul W. Smith is host of “The Paul W. Smith Show” on WJR-AM (760) from 5:30-9 a.m. Monday-Friday.
