The unflappable Carmen Harlan
I grew up watching Carmen Harlan do the news on Channel 4.
OK, that’s a lie.
The worst thing I’ve ever learned about Carmen is that we are about the same age.
But if you have ever seen her picture next to mine, you would think I was lying again.
I couldn’t believe it either when I found out we were both at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor at the same time.
Carmen Harlan has announced her retirement after nearly 40 years of guiding us through the ups and downs of our world through her excellent, relaxed and unflappable television style. She first worked with Mort Crim, and for the last several years with Devin Scillian, both excellent in their own right.
Harlan’s last scheduled newscast is set for November 11.
Here are some quick, but important notes:
■■Dan Weingartz (“Everything from Lawn to Snow”) has kicked off the family’s seventh year of their “Mow Down Hunger” campaign, helping Gleaners Community Food Bank give meals to school kids who wouldn’t have anything to eat on the weekend without their help. Weingartz will match all donations to Gleaners until its 1 million meal goal is met. If you would like to help, call 1-866-GLEANER or visit Weingartz.com.
■If you’d like to run for a reason, you’re in luck!
On Sunday, the fabulous Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, the St. John Guild, and Fontbonne Auxiliary of St. John Hospital and Medical Center are hosting the “Run for a Reason” 5K run/walk and 1 mile fun walk. It will start and end at the Yacht Club.
Here’s an autumn deal: Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island has a special fall weekend offer October 14-15 for just $129 per person, per night.
