Smith: ‘Pure Michigan’ tour a hit

“Outta’ My Mind on a Monday Moanin’”

Long before Michigan was pure, we started taking my show on the road to promote Michigan tourism. Hard to believe, but we have just concluded our 15th year of celebrating our great state and all it has to offer!

Our Paul W. Smith 2018 (now) Pure Michigan Tour began over hill and dale with a stop at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale. We were welcomed to this storied institution of higher education by college President Larry Arnn, Mayor Adam Stockford, professors and students. It doesn’t take long to understand why Hillsdale is so highly regarded across the nation and around the world.

Next up, the American Center for Mobility at Willow Run Airport, also home of the Yankee Air Museum and where we earned the title of “The Arsenal of Democracy,” producing one B-24 Bomber every 55 minutes with Rosie the Riveter(s) making an indelible name.

Our next stop aboard our Dean Trailways luxury motor coach, captained by Pablo Fajardo, was the Midwest’s oldest city, Sault Ste. Marie, proudly celebrating its 350th anniversary. Gov. Rick Snyder checked in to remind us how important the Soo Locks are to the country and why we need an additional passageway sooner rather than later. We had dinner at the Antlers and an early lunch at Clyde’s Drive-In, and yes, I did have a delicious Big C burger!

Then it was onto Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry and our annual first of the year broadcast from Grand Hotel.

On our way to Midland, we stopped to see our friend, Marty Hornacek, and his team at (must see!) Northwoods Wholesale Outlet in Pinconning. You really have to go there to understand it.

More next week!
