“Outta’ My Mind on a Saturday Moanin’”

Welcome to my annual Thanksgiving column.

No, not that one, the one where I give thanks to all of the great and generous people who made it possible to raise over $500,000 (net) again this year for the Detroit Police Athletic League. In our 11 years of doing the Paul W. Smith Golf Classic, we have contributed over $4.5 million net to helping Detroit PAL’s leader, Tim Richey; director of development Renee Peck; the great PAL board and hundreds of caring and giving volunteers, helping over 11,000 kids a year through athletic, academic and leadership development programs. There are far too many wonderful and generous people to name here, but I hope you will go to and make note of our many hole sponsors, Paul’s PALs and others we are so grateful for.

Our presenting sponsors give us an incredibly important foundation to build upon every year.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Dan Loepp, Andy Hetzel and all of the hard working family members from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. To Bob Paul, Kim Lowell-Leverett and all at Compuware. Special thanks also to Debbie Windey, Deb Thornton and everyone at Ford Motor Co. Maria Mainville, Heather Rosenkar and all at General Motors Co. Thank you Brian Glowiak and all you represent at the Chrysler Foundation, and to Curt McAllister, Mona Richard and all at Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc.

Thanks to Nick DeMarco, Coleen Wood and everyone at Delta Air Lines for the best first prize ever.

Also contributing greatly to our success: Marisa Blank, Mike Martini and Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations for the best gifts to our golfers.

Thank you, April Diez of The Diez Group/Kenwal Steel.

Matt Simoncini, Mel Stephens, Valencia Morris and all of Lear Corp. came through for the kids again, in a big way, as did Catherine Cooper and Meijer, and David Fischer, Tricia Burton and all of the great dealerships of the Suburban Collection.

Add to that the Young family from Absopure Water; the Ahee family from Ahee Jewelers; the McInerney family from Hoot McInerney’s Star Lincoln; First Merit Bank; Quicken Loans’ Barton Malow; our leader, Beth Dameron and her incredible PCG Campbell team; Todd Beal and his great Detroit Golf Club team; ColorTech Graphics for our fabulous program book; SignText Inc. for the beautiful signage; and the PNC Foundation for continued great support.

And finally, our title sponsor and my home, Cumulus Broadcasting’s News/Talk 760 WJR Radio. Thank you to all of my colleagues behind the scenes and especially Tom O’Brien, Ann Thomas and my Kimmy for all of the support, all of the time.

Paul W. Smith is host of “The Paul W. Smith Show” on WJR-AM (760) from 5:30-9 a.m. Monday-Friday.
