Health care benefits are most often associated with physical ailments, diseases and medical emergencies. But, a closer look will reveal so much more.

Many health care plans available today include enhancements that can help you maintain or improve your overall health. For example, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan offers plans with preventive dental care – such as cleanings, X-rays and fluoride treatments; routine vision exams, including glasses and contacts and hearing checkups with hearing aid benefits. And some of these plans are offered with $0 premiums.

In addition, online office visits are available as a convenience. If you’re feeling under the weather and don’t feel up to getting dressed and driving to your doctor’s office, a simple phone call will connect you and your physician. Or, you can call a 24/7 nurse line to get advice about minor issues, such as bee stings or common cold relief. Of course, if you’re seriously injured or ill, you’ll want to call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

We often don’t think of support services as part of an insurance plan; however, access to transportation, caregiver coaching and in-home assistance are now commonly offered. More recent plans cover expenses for such things as over-the-counter pharmacy supplies and healthy food items.

Member-centric plan benefits work to enhance the health of members and address their everyday needs. It’s the future of health care.
