Step back in time and experience knights, pirates, fairies and thrilling shows at the Michigan Renaissance Festival.

The Michigan Renaissance Festival is just around the corner. Journey back in time with more than 200 merchants contributing to the atmosphere of this charming 16th century village featuring entertainment, shopping, fun and food fit for a king!

From small beginnings in 1979, the show has continued to attract fans, offering more each year in entertainment, education, food and art. Now seeing more than 250,000 fans a year, the Festival has provided opportunities for fans to escape from this realm, and journey into a time when Kings and Queens rule and Mermaids and Fairies are more than just a dream.

Returning on August 17th through September 29th, the Festival will open its gates with an array of new features: Test your puzzle solving skills to escape the Executioner’s Dungeon in the medEVIL Escape Room. Play Viking Games, learn about Viking Lore or watch the Viking Battles in the All New Viking Encampment. Get your picture taken with the Live Pegasus or try your hand at Pickle Jousting.

The Festival Features 7 Themed weekends for fans to indulge in many new experiences. See below to find out which one calls out to you.

Pirates abound at the Michigan Renaissance Festival.

Opening weekend of the Festival, August 17th and 18th, will be Pirate and Pet Fest. Bring out your furry friends to enjoy Pet Entertainment Variety Acts from Classic K9s, test your pups speed in the Wiener Dog Races and Agility Course or show off their best outfit in the Pet Costume Contest. 

Break out your kilt August 24th and 25th for a Highland Fling Celebration. Watch feats of strength during the Highland Heavy Games, take part in the Men in Kilts Competition or enjoy the sights and sounds of the Scottish Pipe and Drum Band or Scottish Dancers.

Vikings will invade during Labor Day Weekend, August 31, through September 2nd.  Participate in the Viking Costume Contest, Viking Games and be sure to check out the Viking Encampment. Show off your best ink in the Tattoo Contest presented by Loyalty Tattoo or parade your facial follicles in the Beard Competition to win prizes from Detroit Beard Co.

Experience the Wonders of the World on September 7th and 8th. Gear up for a Steampunk invasion, watch the Belly Dancing Competition and check out entertainment from around the world including Ballett Folklorico De Detroit. Wonders of the World weekend will also feature interpreters at various stages and events for the Festival’s Deaf Awareness Promotion.

Celebrate the luck of the Irish on September 14th and 15th for Shamrocks and Shenanigans Weekend. Wear your green, take part in the Bonnie Knees Competition or sample some classic Irish Fare. Shamrocks weekend will feature the fan favorite Irish Heavy Games including; Stone Throw, Sheaf Toss and Caber Toss.

The season for love is the Harvest Season.

Fall in love with the Harvest Season during Harvest Huzzah Weekend, September 21st and 22nd. Indulge your taste buds at the BBQ Festival. Pit Masters will be grilling up their best BBQ for the BBQ Competition and for Festival Goers to enjoy. Test your aim during the Annual Archery Competition or scour for goods in the Harvest Market. 

The best endings are Sweet Endings at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. Satisfy your sweet tooth September 27th, 28th and 29th during the Final Festival Weekend. Friday, the Festival will welcome in School Groups for an amusing and educational experience; and an awesome shopping opportunity with the annual Ladies Shopping Day. On Saturday, check out creations by local Bakers battling it out during Cupcake Crusades, shop for goodies at the Sweets Market or participate in spousal events such as Fudge Fling or the Couples Pie Eating Competition.
