Detroit — Native Metro Detroiter J.K. Simmons will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Tigers' opener April 6 at Comerica Park.
Simmons, an acclaimed actor who won an Oscar last month for his role in "Whiplash," is a longtime Tigers fan, having grown up in Grosse Pointe.
In fact, Simmons even portrayed a Tigers manager on the big screen, in "For Love of the Game" starring Kevin Costner.
Simmons, 60, also is known for popular roles TV roles on "Law & Order," "Oz" and "The Closer," and his work in the "Spider-Man" trilogy.
He's also scheduled to appear in the upcoming "Terminator" movie, out this summer.
The Tigers confirmed the Simmons news on Twitter on Thursday night.
The Tigers said earlier Thursday a national anthem singer hasn't been finalized.
The Tigers face the Twins on Opening Day.
