Detroit News predictions: Michigan State vs. Western Michigan

The Detroit News

Matt Charboneau: Michigan State will be entering a fairly hostile environment at Western Michigan’s Waldo Stadium where an eight-win team from last season will have upset on its mind. Third-year coach P.J. Fleck has the Broncos on their way back to contending in the MAC, and a win over a top-five team would be huge. But Michigan State is too deep for Western Michigan. Michigan State 38-17

Angelique Chengelis: Michigan State has big hopes, and it all starts on the road at Western Michigan. The Spartans have too much across the board, and QB Connor Cook will shine. Michigan State 28-6

Bob Wojnowski: This smells like a trap, with the Spartans opening in Kalamazoo against a spirited MAC team on the rise under P.J. Fleck. With Oregon looming, Michigan State will be tested for a half, maybe longer, but has more than enough heft to wear Western Michigan down. Michigan State 37-13

John Niyo: Waldo Stadium should make for a wild scene. But Michigan State’s strength on both lines should help control the game and crowd, though I’d expect plenty of green, anyway. The caveat: Will inexperience in the backfield lead to turnovers that give the Broncos an early boost? Michigan State 38-17
