Ohio State ousts Michigan State in Big Ten hockey

Mason Jobst scored 13:47 into overtime and Ohio State eliminated Michigan State, 4-3, in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten tournament at St. Paul, Minnesota.

After Ohio State (14-17-4) took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on goals from John Wiitala and Tommy Parran, Michigan State (10-23-4) took the lead with second-period goals by Joe Cox, Matt DeBlouw and Michael Ferrantino.

Matthew Weis scored 3:17 into the third period for Ohio State to tie the score at 3.

Christian Frey made 31 saves to earn the win for the Buckeyes. Jake Hildebrand stopped 44 shots for the Spartans.

Penn State 5, Wisconsin 2: Eric Scheid scored the first and last goals for the third-seeded Nittany Lions as they beat the sixth-seeded Badgers in the first quarterfinal. Connor Varley and Ricky DeRosa also scored for Penn State, and DeRosa assisted on the next goal by Tommy Olczyk.

The Badgers never led; they got scores from Luke Kunin to make it 2-1 and Grant Besse for a 4-2 lead.

Wisconsin goaltender Matt Jurusik had 24 saves; Penn State’s Eamon McAdam made 35.

McAdam led the Big Ten in save percentage (.915) in the regular season and was second in goals-against average (2.88) behind only Big Ten goaltender of the year Eric Scheirhorn of Minnesota.

Wisconsin finished 8-19-8, and Penn State is 21-12-4.
