Report: African, 30, played on Windsor HS basketball team

The Detroit News
Jonathon Nicola

Jonathon Nicola, an African believed to be 30 years old, was arrested by Canadian border officers after he posed as a teenager and played basketball for Windsor Catholic Central High.

The Windsor Star says Nicola, 6-foot-9 and 202 pounds, has been attending Catholic Central for the last six months as a 17-year-old. He had been living with the school’s head basketball coach, Pete Cusumano, through the program Canada Homestay, which finds homes for foreign students.

Cusumano told the Windsor Star he couldn’t comment on the situation.

“This is a matter that’s still outstanding before the federal authorities," Stephen Fields, spokesman for the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, told the Windsor Star. “We can’t really comment on it.”

Nicola, who is from Sudan, is in custody at the South West Detention Centre. The Star said there will be a hearing next week with the Immigration and Refugee Board.
