Claressa Shields of Flint, 2012 Olympic gold medalist, ran her winning streak to 47 matches with a unanimous decision over Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands, winning the middleweight title at the world championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. Shields, who won her second straight world title, was named the outstanding boxer of the tournament.
“To be a two-time world champion feels great,” Shields said. “I have never had these emotions before and it was definitely overwhelming. It made me feel so complete and happy in my heart. My confidence never goes away. I’m just ready to train and get better for (the Olympics).”
