Detroit – Racer Matt Mingay, who rolled his vehicle in the SPEED Energy Stadium Truck Series race on Belle Isle Saturday, remained in stable but serious condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Mingay’s family said the 37-year-old driver underwent surgery on facial injuries Saturday night, according to a statement from the Truck Series.

Series driver Paul Morris, a close friend of Mingay's, revealed the extent of Mingay's injuries after Sunday's Truck Series race on Belle Isle.

“He’s in pretty good (shape) considering he’s lost a fair bit of his lower face, jaw and bottom teeth,” Morris said. “But, his brain’s intact, his spine’s intact, so he’s got a long ride ahead of him. He’s not going to win a beauty contest in the next year or two, so hopefully we’ll get him out of here in the next couple of weeks, get him stabilized and back to Australia, get his head rebuilt and be brand new.”

Matt Brabham won Sunday's race, giving him a two-race sweep in Detroit over the weekend.

The series features high-horsepower trucks designed to drive off jumps. Races feature ramps and jumps as high as 20 feet and as long as 50 yards.

Mingay was driving in a pack after Turn 5 at the west end of the circuit on Belle Isle when his truck veered to right, dipped and rolled. The roof of the truck appeared to sheer off and Migay’s upper body was exposed, as the truck flipped.

Attendants worked for more than 10 minutes to extract Mingay, placed him on a stretcher and took him to an infield medical facility, before he was taken to Receiving Hospital.

Originally listed in critical condition, his condition was upgraded during the day Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The remaining portions of the race were cancelled, after the long delay for attending to Mingay.

An Australian, Mingay is a professional stunt driver and entertainer, who owns Stuntz Inc. He has performed stunts in Mission Impossible II and Bollywood films.

He was a replacement driver for the race Saturday.
