Canton's Schmitt named Olympic swimming captain

Canton's Allison Schmitt was one of six swimmers named Olympic captains by USA Swimming Tuesday.

Schmitt, a three-time Olympian from the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, will compete at the upcoming Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The other women's captains are Cammile Adams (Cypress, Texas/SwimMAC Carolina) and Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I./Bluefish Swim Club).

The men's captains are Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash./California Aquatics), Anthony Ervin (Valencia, Calif./SwimMAC Carolina/California Aquatics) and Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md./North Baltimore Aquatic Club).

Phelps, the owner of a record 22 Olympic medals, is headed to his fifth Olympic Games, the most for an American male swimmer.

Team members voted for the captains Monday night during training camp in San Antonio. The 2016 Olympic Games pool competition opens Aug. 6.
