Some of the premier drivers in hydroplane racing will be competing this weekend in Quake on the Lake at the Pontiac Lake State Recreational Area in Waterford.

Jimmy Shane is among the drivers competing in the 17th annual event, which showcases one of North America’s fastest one-mile courses.

“We’ll have a large number of top drivers competing this year in the APBA Summer Nationals which has 14 different inboard classes which includes the flatbottom with teams coming in from California and the east coast,” Quake chairperson Mary Anne Wilson said. “A number of the Unlimited drivers will also be in the field, including Jimmy Shane, Tommy Thompson, Scott Liddycoat and J. Michael Kelly.”

Shane is a two-time champion in Unlimited Hydroplane racing, winning the Gold Cup in 2014 and the UAW-GM Spirit of Detroit Hydroplane race last year.

He will be competing in a 1-Liter Modified. Thompson will race in Grand Prix, and Mark Weber is driving in Grand National Hydro.

Shane recently resigned his seat in Unlimited competition with the Miss Madison team.

“We had 56 race teams last year and we already have 90 signed up for this event,” Wilson said. “We have a 14-year-old competing in the 1.5-Liter stock boat which goes upward of 70-80 miles per hour. The top boats can reach 170 (mph).”

Racing is at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 5-12. Children 4 and under are free.

The Gold Cup is Aug. 26-28 on the Detroit River.
