WDFN to add more local sports-talk programming

A familiar sports-talk radio voice is coming back to the Metro Detroit airwaves.

Gregg Henson will return to WDFN (1130-AM), teaming up with Jim Costa and Drew "Big Droo" McCarthy in a show that will air weekdays from 3-6 p.m., and be simulcast on WMAX (96.1-FM) in Grand Rapids.

An official announcement will be made by WDFN during Matt Shepard's morning show Wednesday morning.

"I'm extremely excited to return to where it started for me," said Henson, who will do the broadcast  from Pittsburgh, where he has a show on Pittsburgh’s ESPN affiliate. "DFN has always been home and I'm hoping we can make some noise in both markets."

The news comes a month-and-a-half after WMGC (105.1) abandoned the sports-talk market in Detroit after less than three years.

Costa took over the show in Grand Rapids in October 2015, after Sean Baligian left for then-Detroit Sports 105.1.

Henson helped launch WDFN in 1994, and as program director until 2002, he was instrumental in turning the station into the powerhouse sports-talk station in Detroit.

That role has since been taken over by WXYT (97.1-FM).
