Downtown Boxing Club hosts silver gloves tournament this weekend

A state silver gloves boxing tournament for competitors ages 8 to 15 will take place Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17-18, at the Downtown Boxing Club, 6445 E. Vernor Hwy, Detroit.

Downtown Boxing Gym will be the site of a silver gloves tournament for competitors ages 8 to 15.

Admission is $15 a day or $25 for the weekend. Entry fee for boxers is $5 before Wednesday or $10 after.

Boxing will start at 1 p.m. each day. Weigh-ins will take place at 7-9 a.m. followed by physicals at 11 a.m. The event is being is sponsored by the Downtown Boxing Club Youth Program, which mentors people ages 8 to 18.

Champions are chosen from these regions based on age divisions: 8-9 year olds; 10-11; 12-13 and 14-15.

The state tournament is the first in a three-level USA Boxing series in which non-professional youth boxing participants aim to place in regional and then national silver gloves tournaments. Regional competition will include competitors from Region 2 hailing from Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The national tournament is Feb. 2-4, 2017 in Independence, Mo.
