Ann Arbor — Martieon Watson’s goal in stoppage time lifted AFC Ann Arbor to a 1-0 victory over rival Detroit City FC in a National Premier Soccer League match Sunday at Skyline High School.

The victory is the second for Ann Arbor (2-0) in two NPSL matches played and puts the Mighty Oak atop of the Great Lakes Division.

Sunday’s encounter was Detroit’s NPSL opener.

The winning goal came off a curling free kick delivered by defender Jake Rosen who found Watson lurking in the penalty area. Watson’s header hit the crossbar and downward past DCFC goalkeeper Fernando Pina.

DCFC, which faces United Soccer League’s FC Cincinnati in U.S. Open Cup play Wednesday, was denied by Ann Arbor goalkeeper Michael Novotny on a scoring chance in the 76th minute.

Forward Danny Deakin’s knifing free kick found defender Stephen Carroll bearing down inside the penalty area but Novotny came out to deflect the shot away.
