Baseball finals: Brett Upton pitches 1-hitter, Beal City wins D4 title

East Lansing — Beal City scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the Division 4 state championship game at McLane Stadium with a 10-0 rout of Unionville Sebewaing.

Beal City (23-8) won its first state title since winning two straight from 2009-10. It lost in the championship game to Grosse Pointe Liggett in 2013 and to New Lothrop in ’14.

Keegan Haynes led off the sixth with a single and scored, then got up for a second time in the inning and singled again, scoring the 10th run on Nate Wilson’s single to start the wild celebration at home plate.

Senior right-hander Brett Upton was outstanding, limiting Unionville Sebewaing (22-16) to a single hit, striking out eight while allowing two walks.

Haynes led Beal City’s 13-hit attack with three singles and two RBIs. He had an RBI double to break a scoreless tie in the fourth. Colby Berryhill’s RBI single pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fifth before the eight-run uprising in the sixth.
