Detroit — Luke Witkowski cleared waivers Monday and remains with the Red Wings — for now.

Witkowski was not assigned to Grand Rapids, leaving open the possibility he’ll begin the season with the Red Wings.

Additionally, the Red Wings placed defenseman Mike Green (virus) on injured reserve, while forward Evgeny Svechnikov (undisclosed injury) was placed on non-roster injured reserve.

Svechnikov does not count toward the 23-man roster, but can remain with the team while he recovers. It also puts the Wings closer to the $79.5 million salary ceiling, maximizing the relief they get from Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen being on long-term injured reserve.

The Red Wings must turn in their roster by Tuesday’s 5 p.m. deadline.

Defensemen Trevor Daley, Jonathan Ericsson and Niklas Kronwall are all dealing with injuries. Who will be ready for Thursday’s regular season opener against Columbus will be determined during Tuesday and Wednesday’s practices (the Wings were off Monday).
